On our return from the Lamar Valley, we drove up toward the summit of Mt Washburn, which rises to a height of 10,243 feet above sea level. This area is said to have a great deal of wildlife. In fact, some visitors reported seeing bighorn sheep in the area. A dirt road heads up the hill quite a way, providing spectacular views to the north and west. The 1988 fire devastated a great deal of Yellowstone Park. One can see dramatic contrasting areas like the one below, just east of Mt Washburn where fire was present.
