Notes	29 Aug 1862, Daily Gazette, Davenport listed George Hayward as subject to civil war draft; he evidently lived in Davenport township, but outside the city. See Scott co message board item dated 13 Oct 2002 born and lived in Davenport, Scott, Iowa until 1870, after which he lived in Shelby county, Iowa. Pension record In the application for pension on medical examination dated Mar 7 1900, George described his hernia: "My hernia is troubling me more than it --- was. I can not wear a truss and have to go almost every day and lie down and put the hernia back to stop pain. I had the index finger of the left-hand amputated in March 1894, on account of blood poisoning from an injury from a sausage mill leaving my hand stiff and almost useless." In the application for pension increase dated 5 Jun 1900, it was stated: "that said injury was incurred on the 8th day of February 1894, in the following manner, was grinding sausage at his residence and his left [index] finger was accidently caught and crushed in the sausage grinder, taking off about half of the nail, this was followed by blood poisen [sic] and resulted in the amputation of the finger above the third joint, which was amputated the 9th of March, 1894; and further states that said disability was not the result of bad or vicious habits." died 24 Nov 1910 near 6 PM; Pension application -------------------- Gravestone info from Iowa Gravestone Photo Project at http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php/id_169273 -------------------------------
