  Notes	found living with his sister Martha (HAYWARD) PLUM in 1860 census for Scott co, Iowa, Blue Grass --------------------------------- From "Biographical History of Crawford, Ida, and Sac Counties, Iowa" Lewis Publishing Company 1893 sent by Marilyn Dose 28 Jan 2005 via email at dmdose@netllc.net James Hayward, a farmer and stock raiser of Sac County, was born in Scott County, Iowa November 17,1841, a son of Thomas and Harriet (Osmond) Hayward, natives of Dorsetshire, England. They came to Iowa in 1837, when it was yet a territory, and the father died in Scott County in 1849 and the mother in Cedar County in 1889 at the age of 71 years. They reared a family of four children, one son and three daughters. James the subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in his native county. During the war he was stationed at Little Rock, Arkansas, in the Quartermaster's Department, and after the close of the struggle, returned to Iowa. From 1869-1883 he lived in Lincoln and Seward Counties in Nebraska and the latter year purchased 114 acres of land in Clinton Township, Sac County, Iowa. In October 1892 he sold that place and purchased 143 acres adjoining the town of Early, which is now one of the most valuable farms in Sac County. In addition to his farming, our subject is also taking an interest in blooded stock. He has two fine horses, Gambetta, bought of Edward Knott of Waverly, Iowa and Jericho, a French coach. Both are fine horses. In his political relations Mr. Hayward has been a Republican, but is now identified with the third party. He has held the office of Justice of the Peace, a member of the school board, etc. He was married December 30,1869, in Brooklyn, Poweshiek County, Iowa to Miss S. Emma Crozer, a native of Columbiana County, Ohio, who came to Iowa when four years of age. She is the daughter of James and Johanna (Whitezel) Crozer, of Cedar County, Iowa. The parents reared a family of six children, four now living. One son, Charles, served in the late war, in the Second Iowa Cavalry, and is now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Hayward have six children; Nellie May, Albert J., Daisy B., T.H., Charles Arthur and Hattie L. Our subject and wife are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Hayward is prominent in the affairs of the county, and takes an active interest in everything for its good. ------------------------------------ Civil War military service-found at Civil War Soldiers and Sailors website 13th REgiment, Iowa Infantry, Co H (see James Haywood, film M541, roll12) enlisted as Pvt, completed as Pvt __________________ Unable to positively locate in 1870 census found one James Howard, 1870, Farmer, alone in NE, Lancaster, Lincoln, p 3---but no sign of Sarah; searched all of Nebraska counties Lancaster, Lincoln and Seward __________________ Sarah Crozier's parents, James and Joanna Crozier, appear in the 1870 census for Iowa, Cedar, Springdale, p 29 living just three doors down from Charles Mackey and Harriet Hayward Mackey. Harriet was James Hayward's younger sister. Perhaps James Hayward and Sarah Crozier met in Springdale.
