from Diary covering years 1800 through late 1802, supplied via George PEARSON:

Charles performed a variety of tasks both at home and away for the good of the family. At home there were plenty of chores to keep up the farm, like picking up apples, picking corn, making hay, baling hay, mending fences, splitting rails, and planting, hoeing and reaping flax, oats, rye, corn, potatoes, and watermelon. The sheep were tended to as well. Often Charles earned extra money working for nearby farmers, helping them with the same kinds of tasks. He traveled often to make shoes for others. The family went to church every week, always resting on Sundays. They fasted occasionally as well. For relaxation, Charles fished and hunted squirrels. He took music lessons at one point, playing in a band on one occasion, though he never indicated what instrument he played.
