Appleton Pass-Cat Lake Traverse,  Olympic National Park,  Sep 8, 2008 - Sep 12, 2008     page 4 / 71

The trail begins a moderate climb near the three mile mark. The trees in this forest are tall, though, so the trail was shaded and comfortable. We met a few other hikers along the way, some inbound, some outbound. One gentleman was beginning his solo hike of the Bailey Range traverse. After a few minutes sharing my experiences in that area, he asked if I was Ron Hayward. I answered in the affirmative, and he explained that he had used my website review of that area as part of his preparation! I was pleased to find another outdoor enthusiast had enjoyed the story and photos I had shared.

We reached Sol Duc Camp #4 by late afternoon. This camp was nothing special. There was no view and no easy access to the river. There is room for just one party. Unfortunately, the park service has had to place quota limits on use of some areas within the park. The Sol Duc river is one these areas, and Camp #4 was the best suited and available campsite which fit our plans. The camp is situated on an embankment above the river. A little hiking through the brush was rewarded with nice views of the water below.
