I continued up the hill after eating some lunch and refilling my water bottles. The next section of trail would be dry.
I worked my way up the hill a couple hundred feet, then through the narrow gap in the trees. This put me in the meadow around 5500 feet, on the shoulder of Mt Carrie. The view was wonderful: Mt. Carrie over my left shoulder, Mt. Olympus to my right, and the Bailey Range up the valley ahead!
As I climbed, a marmot was there to greet me, though he didn't make the usual sharp warning to his neighbors. He simply moved closer to his den in the rocks, cautiously watching me as I photographed him.
