After getting our boots back on, we ascended the crude trail up the side of the hill. The trail was so tough one would have thought that even goats would have avoided it. It went straight up the hill at times, through sticker bushes, and a little more slide alder, over rocks and limbs. It was tiring, to say the least. Finally, after gaining about 200 feet, the terrain eased a bit and we entered thin forest. A few hundred yards further brought us to a meadow high above the Elwha Basin.
