    Chas. Mackey Obituary

    Funeral Held Yesterday

Interment Was Made at Downey--Many Sorrowing Friends Present

The funeral of the late Chas. Mackey was held from the home yesterday and interment was made at Downey, the trip being made by the cortege driving to the cemetery. Many floral offerings as well as the presence of friends from Cedar Rapids, West Liberty and other places at a distance attested the esteem in which Mr. Mackay had long been held.

Deceased was born in the county of Ontario, Province of Canada, August 13th, 1837. Died at his home in Iowa City, at 2 o'clock on the morning of May 23, 1909, of paralysis and apoplexy, after an illness of five days; aged seventy-one years, nine months and ten days. He leaves surviving him, his widow, Harriet T. Mackey, three sons and two daughters, three sisters and two brothers.

Charles Mackey was married February 17, 1864, to Sarah Thompson and to this union two sons were born, Levy Mackey of Cedar Rapids, and Chas. Mackey of West Liberty, Iowa. In 1868 his wife died and on March 21, 1869, he was married to Harriet T. Hayward, who now survives with the fruit of that marriage, to-wit: Walter Mackey of Downey, Iowa; Charlotte M. Gorman of Iowa City, and Carrie E. Becker of Medford, Oklahoma; a son, Sylvester Mackey, born of this union, died in infancy.

Deceased spent his early life in work as employee of the railroad and in steamboat work in the east and in 1862 he came to Iowa, and in 1866 he settled on a farm near Downey that he owned for forty years thereafter, and in the year 1887 he removed to Iowa City, where he has since resided almost continuously.

In 1883 he declared his faith and belief in the doctrine as taught by the Methodist church and has been an ardent supporter and follower of the faith since that time. He had no enemies, and was beloved and honored by all his acquaintenances. He was charitable and kind to the needy and always divided his blessings the Lord trusted to him, with his family and freinds. He has realized for some time he was on the afternoon side of life, yet he was in the best of health and spirits up to the minute he was struck down with the fatal blow. He was placed in charge of th best medical attendance and nurse to be had in the city, and all was done and administered that is known to the medical science, but to no avail. He hardly recovered consciousness from the moment he was taken ill. Hardly a soul could have passed to the unknown beyond, in our city, that would be more missed or of greater loss than the passing of Charles Mackey.

He has gone into that sleep from which no traveler e'er returns and the community is clouded in darkness and the family and friends in mourning.
