    Mrs. H. T. Mackey is laid to rest

    The funeral of Mrs. Harriet T. Mackey who passed away Friday evening, Nov. 20, at 6:40 o'clock was held at her home, 435 S. Johnson St., Sunday afternoon, Nov. 22. Interment was in the cemetery at Downey.

    Harriet T. Hayward was born Sept. 28, 1850, in Scott county, near Davenport.

    Early in life, she joined the Methodist church. She was a successful school teacher, filling with efficiency her place as teacher and friend. Many of her old pupils came to see her during her last illness.

    On March 12, 1869, she was married to Charles Mackey, who passed away in 109 [sic]. Mr. and Mrs. Mackey spent their early married life in Johnson and Cedar counties, but for the past twenty years made their home in Iowa City, where Mrs. Mackey was a member of the Methodist church. W.R.C. and Johnson County Old Settlers' association.

    Mrs. Mackey was a bright, happy woman, always ready to do for her family and friends. She devoted her time and strength to her church which she loved and when she taught, and was chorister in Sunday school for many years in addition to her work, she had a strong, sweet voice.

    Until her health failed her she belonged to the different church societies in Iowa City.

    Through her long illness she greatly appreciated her friends and she dearly loved the flowers they brot [sic], seeming to live over in them her love for the country home of her childhood.

    Surviving are her five children, Levi, of Cedar Rapids; C.J., of West Liberty; W.L. of Downey; Mrs. Charlotte Gorman of Iowa City; and Mrs. J.P. Becker of Wichita, Kans.

    1910 census, Johnson co, 5-Wd, ED 91, p 4a indicates Charlotte Gorman and mother Harriet Mackey with trade of "Own Income" indicating they may have been rather wealthy for their time.

    Harriet married Charles MACKEY 12 Mar 1869. Charles was born 13 Aug 1837, Ontario, Canada; died 23 May 1909, Springdale, Cedar, Iowa; was buried 25 May 1909, Downey Cemetery, Springdale, Cedar, Iowa. [Group Sheet]
