From Oscar JOHNSONs story of Olaus and Sophie JOHNSON:

Olaus and Sophie sailed for "AMERIKA" about two weeks after their marriage, sailing from Norway to England, spent three days crossing England by train, and spent six weeks crossing the Atlantic, due to head winds and storms. Captain Rod of the ocean liner, in the act of saving a woman from being washed overboard by a huge wave, was himself washed overboard and lost.

After much delay in Quebeck, (The U S railroads were busy returning soldiers home from the civil war), they finally arrived in Chicago, -broke- so Olaus had to go out in the harvest field, to earn enough money to take them by steam boat to St Louis, down the Ohio River, and from there to Red Wing, Minn., their final destination, where they arrived some time in July. A few years were spent working at various jobs, such as logging, but eventually went into farming near Goodhue, Minn. until the spring of 1886, they decided to move to North Dakota arriving at Kindred, where they farmed until Olaus' death in 1911.
