Eleven Bull Basin,  Olympic National Park,  Sep 10, 2012 - Sep 14, 2012     page 3 / 57

I reached the lake around 5:00pm. I had made very good time for the first day. I quickly checked around the lake for the available campsites, paying particular attention to those which might be most protected from the weather. My shelter consisted of a bivy bag and a tarp. I wanted to stay out of the weather for this first night.

I chose a campsite just downhill from the lake. If the wind picked up, I thought, I'd be most protected here. There was no rain, so setting up the tarp was straightforward. I kept moving to stay warm. After the tarp was set up, I quickly changed into dryer clothes, stowed my gear under the tarp and began my evening regimen of soup and dinner.
