As we continued our walk through the Japanese Garden, we came across the contraption below. One long narrow bamboo pipe had water slowly flowing from it, dripping into a larger bamboo pipe. The larger pipe was blocked, just left of the fulcrum. The larger pipe would fill over in a minute or so. Once the water volume became heavy enough, the pipe would tilt to the right, dumping the load of water. As it returned to it's resting position (shown in photo below) it made a nice "Thunk!" against a rock in the pond. The sign indicated this was a boar scarer. I guess it must have worked well, we never saw any boars.
