While the ship was in port, long rubber strips were placed in the catapult grooves. Here we see deckhands removing those strips. Also note the low glass enclosed room (the bubble) where the catapult operator sits. The ball (the light fixture behind the bubble) is used to guide pilots laterally and vertically to the flightdeck.
