The following morning we awoke to clear skies and a cool temperature. We had a quick breakfast and packed our gear. Normally, we would have left our gear, taking just some trail food for the day hike to the high country. But with the possibility of deteriorating weather in the forecast for the evening, and the animals voracious appetite for anything with salt, we decided to pack up all our equipment and haul it back to the pass. We would stash most of our gear in the trees. We could decide that afternoon if we would return to the Basin for one more night's stay, or head out if the weather turned sour.
