Royal Lake '04, Olympic National Park, Aug 26, 2004 - Aug 27, 2004 page 9 / 49
After finishing our meal, and hanging our food (to prevent the animals from eating it), we took a short walk to familiarize ourselves with the area around the lake. We wandered south into a large meadow, spotting a doe and her spotted fawn. They seemed as interested in watching us, as we were in watching them.
We turned a corner and spotted an enormous rock. It looked oddly out-of-place. This must have been the Shelter Rock mentioned in the hiking guide. Indeed, it appeared that one could stay dry during a rain shower by remaining under the rock's overhang, though there were certainly good campsites nearby which would have provided similar shelter.
