We traveled over loose talus at times, eventually reaching an area of uncharacteristically solid rock. Much of the rock in the Olympics is weathered and rotten, providing rather treacherous climbing conditions, but here there was a great abundance of safe rock upon which to scramble. We climbed up the rock for a bit, then decided to eat some lunch. It was already noon, and I was hungry. We sat and looked way down the valley, toward Royal Lake.
