North Fork Quinalt River, Olympic National Park, Sep 24, 2010 - Sep 25, 2010 page 23 / 30
The park website stated that a more suitable crossing existed upstream about a hundred yards. I dropped my pack and beat my way through the brush, working my way up the river. I was able to scramble down to the river bed and survey the area more closely. I wandered up a gravel bar in the middle of the river. I found a log crossing another deep channel filled with swift water. I could easily cross the river here, but would need to work my way around the root ball on the opposite side. The water was deepest just under the tree roots. One slip could lead to disaster.
