North Fork Quinalt River,  Olympic National Park,  Sep 24, 2010 - Sep 25, 2010     page 15 / 30

I soon reached Trapper Shelter. It was just after 4:00 pm. The roof had recently been replaced, for the scent of the cedar shakes was still quite strong. This shelter is one of only a handful left standing in the park. At one time over a hundred shelters stood throughout the park, but in the past few decades damage, erosion and park policy have reduced this number to about twenty. Though they are great places to seek refuge from storms, they are often inhabited by field mice who enjoy hunting for hiker's trail mix!

One campsite and a pit toilet were found near the shelter.
