During my hike through a quieter section of forest, I startled a bear. He hit the trail, looked at me and ran away. He stopped briefly behind a tree, as if he was hiding, and looked at me as I spoke softly to him and snapped this photo. Then he bounded away further, left the trail and headed down the hillside.
