LaCrosse Basin,  Olympic National Park,  Aug 12, 2002 - Aug 16, 2002     page 19 / 19

I told Tom about several of the shelters in the Olympics. We were surprised not to find any. The one at Upper Duckabush Camp was gone, probably burned piece by piece as it deteriorated. The shelter at Home Sweet Home will be rebuilt, we were told. The plans are all set, but the wood is still too green and heavy to be airlifted into the area!

The following morning was again cool and comfortable. The nine mile walk from Nine Stream to the trailhead was a very pleasant one. We made it out by lunchtime. The first stop was at the Hoodsport Drive-in on highway 101. Tom and I were sure happy to find this place still doing business (though under new ownership now). The burgers were great!

The trip was an excellent one, despite the bugs. I did make a mental note, however, to go back to the LaCrosse basin area either earlier in the year while there is still some snow in the area, or in the fall, to avoid the heat and the bugs.

In all, we covered 45.6 miles and gained 9500 feet.
