Flapjack Lakes '06,  Olympic National Park,  May 19, 2006     page 2 / 11

I continued up the trail a bit further until I encountered an awful smell. I kept walking while I tried to identify the odor. Then it dawned on me--it smelled like rotten fish. Yuck! I turned back a short distance to see if any animals were attracted by the smell. I saw none so continued walking, back up the trail again. Then I saw several ravens take to the trees. I looked to my right and saw a black bear from where the ravens had flown away. The bear caught sight of me and slowly wandered into the brush. Unfortunately, the bear was not interested in sticking around for a decent photo! I did get a couple of shots of him despite his bashfulness.
