Fishing the John Day, Camping, Aug 10, 2006 - Aug 11, 2006 page 19 / 24
After several minutes without any luck, we found another hole to fish for bass. The fishing there was much better than we had experienced near our campsite. After catching about a dozen bass, we moved upstream further, where Den tried again to land a steelhead.
A large rock in the middle of the river, just downstream of some shallow rapids, created a calm, resting location. The fish would likely be there, Den told me. He placed the fly just downstream of the rock and immediately got a strike. The fish swam upstream then down, but did not give Den much of a fight. He landed the steelhead in a couple of minutes. It was fun to see how much enjoyment Den had getting that fish.
