Having been to the basin in winter once before, I recalled that the trail gradually climbed into a small opening, our destination. We, however, continued along the ski track, which took an unexpected turn up the hill. I figured the track would stop climbing and traverse toward the basin, but it continued upward. Despite the snowshoes, climbing in that fresh snow was quite the workout for us.

We took a quick break, ate a little and tried to stay warm. The air temperature was in the mid 20s.
