After a short break it was time to cross the Catwalk, a narrow arête between Cat Peak and the western ridge of Mt. Carrie. A rough trail, of sorts, led us down about thirty or forty feet before proceeding onto it. We meandered between small trees, whose roots had filled the cracks between rocks, straining to find nourishment in the soil underneath. We traveled over rocks, loose gravel, and limbs. Some of these limbs seemed to reach out and grab us, stopping our movement forward temporarily, until we could coax them to let go. The path jumped from one side of the ridge to the other and back again. There were a handful of short sections with very high exposure down to the valley below. One poorly placed step could put us in grave danger. However, the Catwalk was primarily a scramble.
