The Carl Putvin way trail begins outside the Olympic National Park, not entering the park until within about a half mile of the lake. It is not maintained, yet is in good condition. The trail begins at 1600 feet, with a moderate grade upward, and lets up occasionally, but only briefly. The first couple of miles are in the lower forest, offering few views, other than a brief glimpse of a major creek.
