Eunice Lake / Tolmie Peak,  Mt Rainier National Park,  Oct 28, 2007 - Jan 1, 1970     page 1 / 20

We had another one of those beautiful fall weekends. With the weather so clear, I felt called back into the hills for another autumn hike. This time I headed to the northwest corner of Mt. Rainier National Park. The gate was closed along the Mowich Lake road at 3700 feet, so I expected the number of people in the area to be few. My guess was a good one, for the parking area was empty when I arrived! Of course it was only 7:45 AM, which may have had something to do with the lack of cars! I quickly laced up my boots, threw on my pack, and began the trek up the road to Mowich Lake. The road was mostly clear, initially. Around 4200 feet there were occasional snow patches along the road. At 4400 feet, I left the road for a trail which heads more directly to Mowich Lake. (See the map). Shortly after 9:00 AM I had reached the lake. Its surface was like a mirror, perfectly still.
