HAD LIVED HERE 70 YEARS. ------ Mrs. R. Watkins Passed Away at Her Home Here, January 6--Had Lived Here Long Time. ------ Funeral services for Mrs. R. Watkins, 77, a resident of this city for 70 years, who died Thursday at 1:15 p.m., at her home, 611 Second-st., from heart trouble, following an illness of four months, were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from her home. Rev. L. L. Weis, pastor of the Methodist church, of which deceased was a member, conducted the services. Pall bearers were her six nephews: Ed, Geo. and W.R. Kerrihard, Tom Stratton, A. B. Chapman and Walter Stratton. Singing was by Mrs. Clarenct (sic) Stephenson, who sang two favorite selections of the deceased. Interment was in Red Oak (Evergreen) cemetery. those here from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Anna Lloyd and daughter, Verna, and son, Harold, of Ogden, Utah; Mrs. M.A. Albright, and Guy Day, Red Cloud, Neb.; Walter Stratton, Omaha; J. F. Stratton, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Davis, Mrs. Chas. Vanderpool, Mrs. Sue Hurd, Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Kissinger, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Owens, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Koons, Clarinda; Mrs. J. W. Spiker, Elliott, and Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Wilkins, Denver, Colo. Matilda Catherine Kerrihard was born at Straubston, Pa., Aug. 17, 1849. At the age of six years she came with her parents, Wm. and Susan Kerrihard, to Davenport, Iowa. They moved from there to Lewis, and came to Red Oak in 1857. On Christmas eve, 1868, she was married here to R. Watkins, the wedding being the first held in the old Methodist church at the corner of Sixth and Hammond-sts. The wedding took place under the first public Christmas tree to be held in Red Oak. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins were the parents of four daughters, the surviving are Mrs. Anna Lloyd, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Harry Stevens, Red oak. Mrs. Alma Wilkins died in 1912 and Charlotte died in infancy. Besides her husband and two daughters and grandchildren Mrs. Watkins leaves no immediate relatives. They came to Iowa in 1837, when it was yet a territory, and the father died in Scott County in 1849 and the mother in Cedar County in 1889 at the age of 71 years. They reared a family of four children, one son and three daughters. James the subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in his native county. During the war he was stationed at Little Rock, Arkansas, in the Quartermaster's Department, and after the close of the struggle, returned to Iowa. From 1869-1883 he lived in Lincoln and Seward Counties in Nebraska and the latter year purchased 114 acres of land in Clinton Township, Sac County, Iowa. In October 1892 he sold that place and purchased 143 acres adjoining the town of Early, which is now one of the most valuable farms in Sac County. In addition to his farming, our subject is also taking an interest in blooded stock. He has two fine horses, Gambetta, bought of Edward Knott of Waverly, Iowa and Jericho, a French coach. Both are fine horses. In his political relations Mr. Hayward has been a Republican, but is now identified with the third party. He has held the office of Justice of the Peace, a member of the school board, etc. He was married December 30,1869, in Brooklyn, Poweshiek County, Iowa to Miss S. Emma Crozer, a native of Columbiana County, Ohio, who came to Iowa when four years of age. She is the daughter of James and Johanna (Whitezel) Crozer, of Cedar County, Iowa. The parents reared a family of six children, four now living. One son, Charles, served in the late war, in the Second Iowa Cavalry, and is now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Hayward have six children; Nellie May, Albert J., Daisy B., T.H., Charles Arthur and Hattie L. Our subject and wife are members of the Baptist Church. Andrews in the first Methodist church built in this city and now used as an apartment house. In honor of the occasion, the symbol of the Yuletide season--the Christmas tree--was the principal feature of the decorations in the Watkins home where their children and many relatives gathered to celebrate the event, the entire party attending the Christmas exercises at the Methodist church Christmas eve beside in recollection of the past event when the best gift on the old fashioned Christmas tree comprising a hickory tree with trunk and limbs wrapped in cotton and the decorations composed of pop corn string and muslin strips soaked in alum which when dry produced the glistening stincel effect on which was placed the marriage certificate which launched a happy companionship that has continued down through the years. The first piano ever brought to Red Oak was in the old church and Mr. and Mrs. Watkins recall that for a short time it was feared that this wonderful instrument could not be used for the occasion as there was no one in the city that could play a piano. However, Mrs. DeLay happened to be spending the Christmas holiday in Red Oak and she was able to play and consented to do so for the event, thus eliminating the only possible marr (sic) to the occasion. Mrs. Watkins has resided in this community for the past sixty-three years as a continuous resident. Her maiden name was Matilda Catherine Kerrihard. She was born in Bloomsburg, Marion county, Pa., August 17, 1849. With her parents she came to Red Oak from Davenport in 1861. Mr. Watkins was born in Vernon, Ohio, December 8, 1844, and came to this city in an early day from Monmouth, Ill. He is unable to give the exact date but it was a short time after his wife came here with her parents. They were the parents of three children, one having died. Two daughters, who were at home in honor of the event were Mrs. W. M. Lloyd, of Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Harry E. Stevens, of Red Oak. They are the grandparents of eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Lloyd and great granddaughter, Joyce Hall, of Ogden, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stevens and family were among the relatives present at the festivities which commemorated the anniversary. Mrs. Watkins celebrated her 75th birthday in August and Mr. Watkins was 80 years of age December 8, but despite their advanced years they are hale and hearty and enjoy the blessings that come to those in happy wedlock in their fine home at 611 Second street in Red Oak. -------------------- | Family F322

She was born in Goodhue, Minnesota, Oct. 8, 1878. She moved with her parents Olaus and Sofie (Johnson-Nettum) to Kindred in 1886 where she spent her girlhood days. For several years she was engaged with her sister in the dressmaking and millenery business in Kindred. In the summer of 1910, she left with her brother, Carl and family for the western part of the state and took a homestead in McKenzie County which she later proved up. She was married at Alexander, North Dakota, Novemb er 29, 1911, to Leo Brown. The summons, while no unexpected, yet startled our community. Mr. Kerrihard had been a sufferer from heart trouble since he was 17 years of age. For the last 3 years he has been practically helpless, but his cheerful and courageous disposition made him seem almost well at times. Mr. Kerrihard was born Aug 10, 1856, at Davenport, Iowa; was married in 1874 to Eva M Baker; to them were born 5 children, 1 son and 4 daughters. One daughter preceded him. Those living are William R Kerrihard of Red Oak, IA; Mrs. Daisy F Hall of Waverly, NE; Mrs. Claudine Gordon of Red Oak; and Grace R Kerrihard of Red Oak. He was married to his present wife,, Mollie A Livermore of Lincoln, NE on Sep 15, 1887; the joined the church in 1897. On account of ill health, he removed to Port Angeles in June 1899, where joined the M E Church by transfer of letter in Jul 1899. The funeral was from the house on the afternoon of March 31, and was conducted by the Rev. W H Williston of the M E church, asssisted by the Rev. C E Fulmer of the same church. O. Red Oak, born in Davenport, Iowa, August 10, 1856. His father, W. H. Kerrihard, moved to Montgomery County, Iowa, in 1857, and settled near where Wayne Stennett now lives, building a small mill and it is believed manufactured the first flour ever manufactured in Montgomery County; he afterward lived a year at what is known as Manker's Mill. In 1860 he located in Red Oak and built the steam flouring mills. Thomas commenced to learn the milling trade when he was quite young and took charge of the engine when he was fifteen years old. In February, 1876, he with his brother took the entire control of the mill, their father retiring; they yet control the mills. Thomas moved to his present location in March, 1880, where he owns an improved farm of eighty-five acres, containing a small young orchard; he also owns city property in Red Oak.
