Elwha Basin / Martins Lakes '13,  Olympic National Park,  Sep 17, 2013 - Sep 22, 2013     page 16 / 113

After my break, it was just a couple minutes through the trees before I arrived at the site of the old shelter.

Apparently, the shelter was destroyed several years ago. Disappointingly, the park service decided not to replace this vital structure. Considering that Low Divide is 17.5 miles from the North Fork Quinault trailhead, and some 27 miles from Whiskey Bend, it struck me as a very poor decision not to rebuild a shelter which might otherwise provide some relief to hikers during a storm. Fortunately, there are still a few shelters in the park in good condition for such an event.
