LaCrosse Loop '15,  Olympic National Park,  Sep 10, 2015 - Sep 16, 2015     page 35 / 47

I never did get any rain that afternoon or evening. Even the next day started out mostly clear and dry.

Day 6 I would travel from Little Siberia, down toward Honeymoon Meadows, then up over LaCrosse Pass, and into the Duckabush Valley.

I made quick time descending to the first junction. I removed a layer of clothing and started climbing toward LaCrosse Pass. Travel was quiet and lonely. I saw no other hikers along this stretch. I took a brief snack break about 90 minutes up the hill. I checked the temperature: 42F. But I wasn't cold hauling my big pack up the hill.

A few minutes later I emerged from the trees and into a meadow of long grass. As I took a few steps into this area, I noted that the grass was covered in frost. Checking the thermometer again I discovered it was only 37F. I backtracked to a good sitting log, and donned my rainpants. It made no sense getting soaked walking through that meadow.
